Remember the Paper Dress? By Sandy Mertens Does anyone remember the paper dress? Somewhere I have a picture of my mother wearing one of these dresses. Back in 1966, Scott Paper Company invented the paper dress. This was a marketing ploy, but soon caught on with women across America. Over a half a million of these paper dresses were ordered. This was the time in history when we became the disposable country. Paper plates and cups had gained in popularity. The first paper dress was not at all stylish, very unshapely and quite unflattering. But as the popularity grew, companies began to experiment with fashion design. Strands of fabric were weaved in with the paper making it more durable. Soon there were paper pants, wedding gowns, waterproofed paper raincoats and bathing suits. Just like the 60s, the paper clothes fad soon faded away.
