Big Mistake Living the Dream

By Sandy Mertens

My husband have always been proud that we don’t do dumb things when it comes to spending money. We pay our bills on time, don’t overextend ourselves and we make smart choices. Except for those few really big mistakes, like our biggest yet around five years ago.

What is this really big mistake?

That big mistake was moving from a house that would have been paid for to a house that we will be making payment on for many years. Why did we do this? Were we temporary insane? Did we have a meltdown?

Our first house was a small home that was built in the 70s. Everything about this house was small. Just under 1200 SF. We had a small living room, kitchen/dining room, four very small bedrooms and a small backyard to top it off. It was fine when we first bought it. We hadn’t accumulated half the stuff that we have now. And it was what we could afford at the time. But as the years went on, it seemed like the house kept getting smaller and our stuff on the inside kept growing.

We had talked about moving off and on. But at different times, the economy looked bleak. Or we had some kind of emergency that required money that we didn’t have. So we kept on living in this small little house.

Once our daughter became a teenager, she became embarrassed of this small home. Her embarrassment rubbed off on us, so we began to look for another home.

About five years ago we moved into a bigger home, with a large living room, large dinning room, large bedrooms and kitchen and a nice mortgage. We were both working and doing OK, and then a year ago I was laid off. I have been trying to make money online. But in the meantime we have payments that we wouldn’t have if we still lived in this little house.
